Adam Hewitt, returns to the auction scene

ARA road trip
Agricultural salvage comes with its own specific issues when it comes to collection and classification.

Last month Adam and his close team of 7 staff (many of whom have known Adam for a number of years!) opened a salvage site specialising in agricultural and commercial vehicles.

Based at Harvington Manor near Kidderminster, Worcestershire, This is a family concern, with his son, Jack, responsible for the website and IT and his daughter, Grace, in charge of accounts having just completed a business management degree at Cheltenham University.

They recently held their 5th Auction, which take place every Tuesday. It’s early days but currently they are pulling in over 15 vehicles a day with a 7 to 10 day turn around.

Within the impressive fully licensed 20 acre site there is a depollution area soon to be fitted with two specialised hydraulic single ramps to handle varying sizes of vehicles along with the standard depollution kit which is supplied by Auto Drain.

Adam Hewitt Ltd use the Frontier Vehicle Salvage package from DH Systems for automated processing, which is a must for NFU and Hewitts. Within this system, modifications have been implemented to allow the system to add farm machinery. VRN searches aren’t much good for agricultural vehicles not registered for use on the road so DH Systems have worked with Hewitts to put this in place for these vehicles.

Recovering agricultural vehicles is somewhat different and more challenging than conventional salvage recovery but with their soon to be up and running fleet of six vehicles and with some of the larger farm vehicles to assist, Adam Hewitt Ltd is sure to be a success.

Another aspect regarding the challenges faced with agricultural vehicle salvage is categorising. They run on the same system as vehicle salvage but many insurance assessors don’t fully understand how to categorise agricultural vehicles easily due to the vast array of machinery types. An example of one particular vehicle, a slurry spreader, which was at the site, came in as a Cat B but on closer inspection, even though the vehicle had been rolled, the only damage present was a small dent at the front which means it wouldn’t affect the overall use. This in turn changed it to a Cat C, increasing the sale value considerably.

The next venture in order for Adam Hewitt Ltd to continue to grow will be in dismantling tractor parts, an idea still in development. We shall watch this development with interest!
