There is a use for rusty old cars!

A festival goer’s view at Cineramageddon.

This years’ Glastonbury featured ‘Cineramageddon’ – an interesting use of old vehicles.

Along with the usual music events, a massive outdoor cinema similar to the American drive-in movie theatre was installed with one hundred 1960s American and Cuban cars including some ‘post-apocalyptic style contraptions’ and a jet for festival-goers to enjoy watching movies in these amazing wrecks of vehicles!

Guest of honour, Johnny Depp introduced three of his favourite movies on the Thursday of the music festival: Withnail & I, Dead Man and The Libertine.

According to an article

‘Back in February at an NME festival award ceremony, Michael Eavis founder of the Glastonbury festival described Cineramageddon as the biggest new addition to Glastonbury in 2017.

He said: "We've got a massive film screen and 100 1960s American and Cuban cars.

"We've put them all in straight lines, so you can sit in the cars, watch the films, the sound comes into the cars by a little Bluetooth thingy on the wing mirror. Julian Temple is doing all the film choice. This is the biggest thing of the year."’

Curated by director Julien Temple and set in an auditorium that’s been designed by artist Joe Rush, the drive-in allowed festivalgoers to watch films while sat in a choice of mutated vintage cars, repurposed funfair rides and a Lear jet.

Artist, Joe Rush is the creator of Trash City and the Unfairground and he commissioned the first Arcadia.

He also created the Festival's ‘Car Henge’ (imagine ‘Stone Henge but with cars’) and many other surreal scrap artworks around the festival and those which adorn the pyramid stage.

Other than the creations at Glastonbury, Joe Rush’s art includes RUSTANG SALLY – The idea was thought up in the town where American Graffiti was filmed and it was made from a stretched V8 Ford Broncho and built up with rusty body panels from Cadillacs, Chevrolets and Buicks.

THE ROYAL CAR – was designed to carry Prince Edward, Duke of Wessex and Sir Philip Craven, International Paralympic Committee president. It was created from a Snatch Landrover from Afghanistan, the Kevlar bulletproof glass and armour plating was stripped and grafted together with the body of a 1930’s Rio speedwagon gangster car.

The CLAMPASAURUS was 25 BMW sub frames welded together, which formed the body of the animated hydraulic metal crunching dinosaur. Agricultural machinery for the teeth and head and a slashed tractor tyre for the tail.

THE CAR THAT HAD TO BE TOAD was a giant frog created from two VW beetles welded together.
